SPUS REIGNS TRIUMPHANT; CROWNED 2ND RUNNER-UP IN DIVISION MEET

Despite only having 2 weeks of training, SPUS once again makes a marked difference as they garner numerous awards in the different sporting categories, bagging overall 2nd runner-up on the Division Athletics Meet on February 20, 2022 at Surigao City’s Grandstand.

With a total of 62 medals, SPUS amass 21 gold, 20 silver, and 21 bronze medals.

Led by coach Mr. Joven Serato, SPUS grabbed Eleven medals in Arnis with Leomar Cavite garnering two gold and a silver as he qualifies for the regionals.

After a series of rallies, SPUS captured four medals in Badminton with Carl Biol and Christine Oracoy, each picking up gold coached by Mr. Jesster Abella qualifying for the regionals.

Moreover, SPUS struck eleven medals in gymnastics under Ms. Queenie Bermudez as Angelique Ancla and Shara Miaco takes home gold, and Alex Banacia sneaking two gold medals, qualifying for the regionals.

The most awards nabbed during the Division meet; SPUS made splash as they seize 17 awards with Sam Cagape, Andrei Lipio, Rayven Penera, and Rayniel Sitoy, each grabbing gold and numerous awards coached by Ms. Shelissa Ajoc.

The Division Athletic Meet held meaning to some Paulinian-athletes as senior swimmer Fiona Bagalay quoted: “Privilege para sa ako kay naka experience ako Kay since last year naman diri sa school, atleast memorable.”

Along with coach Mr. Dave Jawhara, SPUS pocketed 4 awards as Aries Pobe bagged gold in Table Tennis.

Additionally, SPUS took home 4 gold medals in Lawn Tennis as Leane Escopete and Maria Cañedo out-dueled opponents, landing gold in women’s secondary double event, and Kenneth Mailig and Zacci Yuipci bagging gold individually, led by coach Mr. Mark Somera, all making the cut for regionals.

“It means a lot to me especially kay nawaya man ang Division meet for 3 years, and ang ako pagkadaog is giving pride to St. Paul University Surigao, para sa ako.” Said Leane Escopete, gold medalist in lawn tennis.

With back-to-back serves and smashes, SPUS nabbed gold in Volleyball women’s category trained by Mr. Roderick Sayod.

Furthermore, SPUS shaded 4 medals with Jeff Tagimacruz and Cedric Parpan sneaking gold in Taekwondo.

The gold medalists, along with other regional qualifiers, are set to clash in the regionals this April 24 to 28, eager to find themselves a ticket to the nationals. (Article by Robwayne Ensomo)
