SPUS HOSTS INTERSCHOOL SCIMATH CONTESTS
As part of its annual tradition of bringing together the best students in Science and Mathematics in the Province, St. Paul University Surigao hosted the 10th Interschool Math and Science Quiz Bowl and the 3rd Science Extemporaneous Speech Competition on October 20, 2023 at the Basic Education Campus.
This is the biggest Interschool SciMath Competition SPUS ever hosted since its inaugural edition with 21 public and private elementary schools competing in the 10th Science and Math Quiz Bowl, and 14 public and private secondary schools in the 3rd Science Extemporaneous Speech Contest.
After three nerve-wracking rounds of the Science and Math Quiz Bowl, the team from Surigao Sun Yat Sen Elementary School composed of Seby Iuseff Lu, Isabel Ladaga, and Shawn Gillian Aguilar bagged the 1st place while the teams from Surigao City Special Science Elementary School and Tubod Central Elementary School ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Meanwhile, at the Senior High School Conference Room, Brayner Kurl Sarvida of Caraga Regional Science High School outperformed 13 other extemporaneous speakers and secured his school’s back-to-back win after being hailed Champion in the 3rd Science Extemporaneous Speech Contest.
The simultaneous conduct of competitions proved to be a resounding success, achieving its objectives of enhancing and sharpening students’ scientific and mathematical knowledge, and fostering cooperation and camaraderie among students from different schools in the province.
The event was a collaborative effort of the Basic Education Department Science and Mathematics Area headed by Subject Team Leaders Mrs. Manilyn Cuantioso-Lapiz and Mr. Reubenjoy Budejas respectively. Instrumental to the success of the said activity as well was the support provided by the Basic Education Student Council Officers and their advisers.
