SPUS holds 2nd International Mamanwa Dialogue Symposium
St. Paul University Surigao, in partnership with the Surigaonon Heritage Center, hosted the 2nd International Mamanwa Dialogue Symposium with the theme “The Mamanwa, HiStory: Lifeline to the Past” last October 26-28, 2023, at SPUS Senior High School conference Hall.
In view of understanding and expressing the Mamanwa’s way of life and challenges, convenors: Jose Boboy, Mamanwa Culture Bearer; Sr. Marie Rosanne Mallillin, SPC, President of St. Paul University Surigao; Dr. Fernando Almeda, Founder of the Surigaonon Heritage Center; and Dr. Leslie Bauzon, Senior Research Fellow, brought forth esteemed researchers and experts from prestigious universities in the Philippines and various countries to exhibit their interest in the study of the history and culture of the Gentle People of the Philippines also known as the Mamanwa.
The activity was participated in by renowned personalities in the world of historical research in the region and in the Philippines, educators from the different private and publics schools, and officials from the Department of Education Surigao City and Surigao del Norte Divisions.
The 3-day dialogue symposium ended with a study tour, at Brgy. Binocaran, Municipality of Malimono, Surigao del Norte, exploring the Mamanwa communities. The immersive activity underscored the importance of recognizing and understanding the tribe, and accentuating their rich traditions and customs.
It aimed to offer insights from the series of dialogues– shedding light on the pressing issues of the Indigenous People encounter and proposed resolutions.
